This Friday Coffee Talk was going to be all about Earth Day, but the untimely passing of Prince has changed our direction and we're going to party like it's 1999. I was shocked to hear this musical icon was no longer with us and the news immediately threw my thoughts back to high school.
I can still remember heading in the rain to the now demolished Hellman Theater in Albany, NY to see the movie Purple Rain. I was with 3 other friends and we were so excited to see this film for the umpteenth time; not so much for the acting- but for the music and the character creating it.
A character he was; make-up, high heels, and a fashion look that never lasted more than 5 minutes, he was masculine and feminine all at the same time. Heck, he changed his name to a symbol for a few years, and yet all of this worked for him. Prince really did transcend rules and we are all better for it.
I have been enjoying watching interviews where Prince let's his guard down a little and allows his sense of humor to shine through. It's infectious and wish we saw more of that over the years, because he seemed to be really funny.
Another talent gone too soon. Sadly, the older I get, the more often news like this seems to happen.
Today, I'm going to play my favorite Prince songs, and soak in everything this day offers.
The sayings “Life is short”, “Live life to the fullest”, “Carpe Diem”...are good reminders that we should Party Like it's 1999, every single day.
So, I hope you play your favorite Prince tunes, crank 'em loud, and dance like no one is watching.
