Today should be a National Day to recognize the one true indulgence I cherish each and every day. Something that puts the gleam back into my sleepy eyes, revs up my brain to function while putting together school lunches and keeps that awful stabbing headache from making my eyes cry.
It IS !! That's right! Today is NATIONAL COFFEE DAY!
A day that lets me and all my fellow coffee mongers pay homage to the liquid gold that brews each morning, calling us with its lovely nutty, bold aroma to come hither and pour glorious hot liquid into waiting cups.
If there is one thing you should know about me…it is this…
I LOVE MY MORNING COFFEE.
And if I do not have a cup first thing….
it can get pretty ugly…
As it did a few years ago while camping with friends. When waking to the quiet of the forest, I made my way to the percolator only to discover the innards not there. HOW was I going to get my coffee? Panic set in and with all the banging of pots and pans searching for the rest of the coffee pot…the rest of the camp woke to the relief that it was just me rummaging through the campsite and not a bear.
Yet, by the time they made it out to the fire, they realized that a bear would have been a better sight to see.
“Kelly, are you okayyyy??” they asked slowly…
And with a wild-eyed look, I responded “No. No I am not ok. Where is the COFFEE??”
“We don't drink coffee.” – which explained why the coffee pot was GUTTED!
Just then, a supply truck was driving through the camp site and with one look to my husband he knew that desperate times called for desperate measures. He chased the truck down and came back with a $10.00 jar of instant coffee. Now, I know that this size jar is only like $2.00 in the stores, but I didn't care. I also knew that I would have to drink about 1 whole pot or eat the granules to reach the caffeine levels my brain needed.
We have taken trips since then and the question is always asked: “Did Kelly have her coffee?” or “Make sure there is coffee nearby for Kelly”.
To this day, our friends chuckle at the camping story, but deep down they know. They know how close they came to this:
Enjoy your day! I am over a nice hot cup of Starbucks French Roast. 🙂
