I was asked by my friend Nicole to think of a word to use as a beacon for the coming New Year. I find this exercise hard to do; how can inspiration be found in just ONE word? After taking a few days to mull it over, I came to realize that yes, a simple string of letters placed together can have a strong meaning and most certainly be inspirational by definition. I chose the word
The meaning behind my word is perfect; “When you savor something, you enjoy it so much that you want to make it last forever.” In the next 12 months, I want to savor everything.
There are a lot of professional goals I have set for this year which will keep me busier than I have ever been and in order to feel balanced, I need to make the same commitment to my personal goals. I’ve decided that for the next 365 days, I am going to slow down and really try to experience each moment as fully as possible.
Savor time with my family; enjoy their physical presence, laugh at stories shared; and to be mentally present and in the moment. This extends to friendships as well. I hope to welcome more friends into our home, around our table and enjoy each other’s company.
Savor the warmth of the sun on my skin, the wind that wisps through my hair, the cold that nips my nose; the chatter of birds perched on a branch, the hum of a passing bumble bee, and the crescendo of ocean waves on the shore. Each sensation meant to let me know I am here, living another day.
Savor the dishes created in the kitchen; allowing sweet and savory to swirl and roll over my tongue as they fill my belly to the point of satisfaction rather than over indulgence. I want to enjoy the moments of teaching how to make traditional family recipes so the next generation will be able to do the same.
Life is sweet and everything involved in it should be savored.
And that is exactly what I intend to do.
